I Don't Need Keys, When I Knock Down Walls

In homage of the Doechii song, "girl, get up" I want to acknowledge one of my favorite lyrics. It goes, "I don't need keys, when I knock down walls."

To me, when I hear this part of the song it means: I don't need this uniquely crafted approval from people to be accepted into the status of greatness, or to achieve something. A lot of times, as black women, for us to be accepted we have to be 10x greater than our opponent. They change the goalpost when you get too close to your goal, especially when you're much closer than who they want to achieve it. My mother taught me at an early age that you have to be so great that they have no choice but to acknowledge and accept you. You have to knock down the whole wall to show them that I am bigger and better than that "key" to success that you think I have to have to be accepted. As a black woman you have to meet every single credential and have more than what they require in order to get let in.

So, with that being said I want to encourage all black women to see something. They may hold the keys to the gates for your success, but you always hold the authority to kick that b*tch open (for lack of better words.) You can do anything you put your mind to, if you work hard enough. If you aren't accepted, don't sulk in sadness and self-pity. Create your own lane. Limits don't exist for you if you refuse to accept the failure forever. They only exist if you give them the power to. Take their power away by showing them that the 'keys to success' don't even matter.

Create your own path when the path they've made for you is too narrow. When you get through to the other side, you can widen that path for others. With love always,

    Sydney Unscripted.
